Marty Martinello had a long, distingushed thirteen year career in the trenches of the CFL from 1954 to 1966. Martinello started his career with Montreal in 1954, playing four seasons for the Als. Martinello went to the Grey Cup with Montreal in 1954, 1955 and 1956, but the Als were on the losing end in all three games to Jackie Parker and the Edmonton Eskimos. Martinello went West in 1958 and played one and bit seasons for the young and struggling BC Lions. During the 1959 season, Martinello was sent back East to join the Toronto Argonauts where he played until 1965. With the Argonauts, Martinello won East All-Star honours at Middle Guard on defense in 1960 and 1961 (there were no CFL All-Stars until 1962). In 1965, Martinello went to Hamilton partway through the season and played one more year with the Tiger-Cats in 1966. Martinello did get to be on a Grey Cup winner finally with Hamilton in 1965. Since there were no tackle or quarterback sack stats kept during the time of Martinello's career, there are few statrs available for him. Martinello did record a pair of interceptions (remember he was a defensive lineman!) and a couple of fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown in 1965 with Hamilton. Martinello is one of a small group of CFL players who come from Nova Scotia and the province is very proud of its native son. Martinello has been inducted into the Nova Scotio Sports Hall of Fame, The Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame and the Nova Scotia Football Hall of Fame.
