Michael Bishop

Michael Bishop possesed one of the strongest arms ever to throw a football in the CFL, but he never enjoyed a lot of success as a quarterback. Bishop signed with the Toronto Argonauts in 2002 and remained with the double blue until half way through the 2008 season. Bishop was mainly a backup quarterback with the Argos to Damon Allen, getting to see action mainly when Allen went down with injuries. Bishop took over as the #1 quarterback finally in 2007 and threw for 2920 yards as he looked poised to become the Argo QB for the future. Just after Bishop resigned with the Argos in 2008, Toronto made a blockbuster deal with Saskatchewan to obtain the 2007 CFL Most Outstanding Player and Grey Cup MVP, Kerry Joseph. Bishop and Joseph were scheduled to split the quarterback duties in 2008, but that didn't work and Bishop was traded to off places Saskatchewan. After winning the Grey Cup with Joseph in 2007, the Riders were still doing well in 2008 despite a horrendous run of injuries. The Riders had started the season with Marcus Crandall installed as the number one quarterback, but he got injured and wasn't effective when he came back. The Riders were not conifident enough in Darian Durant and jumped at the chance to get a veteran quarterback like Bishop with such a strong arm. Bishop ran hot and cold, sometimes looking like a great quarterback and at other times lookinig horrible, throwing interceptions on bad decisions to throw the ball into heavy coverage, thinking his arm was strong enough to make the play. Overall, Bishop played well enough to get the Riders into the playoffs in 2008, but Bishop and the Riders imploded in the West semi-final against BC. Right or wrong, Bishiop was made the scape goat for the loss and was pretty much run out of town the day afte the game. In 2009, Bishop joined the Blue Bombers part way through the season in a situation that became an eerie repeat of 2008. The Bombers had signed Mike Kelly as their new head coach and he brough Stefen Lefors from Edmonton where he had been an assistant coach to be his starter. Lefors din't get off to a good start and Kelly and the Bombers looked aroudn for a veteran quarterback to rescue the season and brough in Bishop. Bishop played much the same for Winnipeg as he had for the Riders the prevous year. Sometimes he would look great and the Bombers would win and sometimes he would toss an interception at a critical time and he Bombers would lose. It finally came to a head in the final game of the regular season against Hamilton with the winner making the playoffs. Bishop had a bad game that day, Winnipeg missed the playoffs, Kelly was fired in the off season and Bishop was released.
