Ed Buckley was a Harvard grad and also served in the United States Marine Corps which probably helps to account for his reputation for toughness. Buckley was a highly successful high school football coach in Massachusetts and Chicago (St. Rita) for 18 years. In 1966, Buckley moved on to become a scout for the AFL and in 1967 signed as the backfield coach for the Montreal Alouettes. Buckley and the Als had a falling out partway through the 1967 season and Buckley returned to the U.S. to resume his scouting career. Ed Buckley passed away on September 15, 1993.
