Marvin Bass was an assitant coach in the CFL with Montreal (1968) and Calgary (1978-80). Bass was born in Norfolk, Virgiania and attended William & Mary (1939-42) on a an athletic scholarship where his coach was Carl Voyles, who would also coach in the CFL (Hamilton Head Coach and GM -1950-55). Bass actually came to Canada in 1966 as the head coach of the Montreal Beavers of the Continental Football League who were owned by Johnny Newman, himself a former Alouettes player who had once tried to buy the Alouettes. When the Beavers folded, Bass was under contract to Newman until the spring of 1969. Bass had grown to like MOntreal, and rather than return to the U.S. which might void his contract, Bass worked as an unpaid assistant coach for the Montreal Alouettes. Bass finally did leave Montreal in the fall of 1968 to join a former William & Mary teammate, Harvery Johnson as one of his assistant coaches with the Buffalo Bills. Bass had a long 60 year coaching career in the college and NFL besides his two stops in Canada. Stops included being an assistant coach with Denver, Washington and the aforementoned Buffalo in the NFL and Head Coach and Athletic Director with South Carolina (1961-65). Bass is a member of the William & Mary, State of Virginia and South Carolina Halls of Fame. Marvin Bass passed away on December 3, 2010.
