Joe Zelikovitz was born in Ottawa in 1915, and played with the Ottawa Rough Riders from 1935 to 1938 as a halfback and flying wing. Nicknamed "The Flying Hebrew" Zelikovitz holds an unofficial CFL record with seven interceptions in one game. The feat happened on October 15, 1938 in a gama against the Hamilton Tigers. The East didn't keep official individual statistics until 1954, other than scoring stats, so the official record is 5 by Rod Hill. Zelikovitz had to leave football in 1939 as World War II got into full swing and with his brothers in the armed forces, Joe was needed to help with the family business. Joe Zelikovitz passed away on January 22, 1998.
