A standout in the NCAA with the University of Virginia Cavaliers in 1956 and 1957, Yarbrough was brought to Montreal in 1961 in the first attempt to overcome the loss of Sam Etcheverry in 1960. Coach Perry Moss wanted a drop -back QB who could run and Yarbrough fit that bill. Yarbrough won the opening day starting QB job for the Als over Wes Gideon and Tom Dublinski but struggled in the four games he played with four interceptions and no touchdown passes. Perhaps it was rust after two years of duty in the US Air Force, but Yarbrough was released a month into the season on August 30. At the time of his release, Yarbrough's two rushing touchdowns made him the Als leadingscorer, which doesn't say much about the Montreal offence in 1961.
