A big (6 foot four, 290 pounds) defensive end, out of Jacksonville State, Mark Word played one season with the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL before coming to Canada. Word joined Hamilton in 2000 and in half a season recorded 5 quarterback sacks. Word returned to Hamilton in 2001, but played only one game that year. Word then returned to the States for two seasons wsith the Cleveland Browns (2002-03). Word had a second tour of duty in the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes in 2005 where he played 7 games.
