Wheeler had tryouts with the Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns of the NFL in 1982. With the start-up of the USFL, he originally belong to the Michigan Panthers, but was traded to the Oakland Invaders. When the USFL expanded, Wheeler was selected in the expansion draft by Oklahoma Outlaws where he played until 1985. The Stampeders signed him as a free agent in 1987.
