Art West is probably best remembered as a Toronto Argonaut. The fleet halfback started his career with the Argos in 1936 and played for them through 1940. In 1937, West finished second in the Big Four / East in scoring with 21 points, and tied for second in 1938 with 25 points. In 1938, West was named a Big Four All-Star and a All East (picked from the Big Four, ORFU and college teams) first team selection as well. West won two Grey Cups with the Argos, in 1937 and 1938. West suffered a serious knee injury in a preseason game in 1939 against the University of Toronto that kept him out all of 1939. West returned for part of 1940, but didn't play in 1941. Early in 1942, West was set to move out to Vancouver, but World War Ii intervened and West ended up playing two seasons (1942-43) with the Toronto RCAF Hurricanes, winning his third Grey Cup in 1942. West's injuries forced him to retire from football, but he came out of retirement late in the 1946 season to play at least one game for the Argos. West started the 1947 season with the Montreal Alouettes and played one game before injuries once more force him out of action. In May of 1951, West was named head coach of the Beachers which at that time had become a farm team of the Argonauts. Balmy Beach finished second in the ORFU, but West was fired just before the final game of the 1951 season.
