Out of New Mexico State, George Wells was one of the top quarterback rushers in the CFL in the 1970s, though unfortunately no official sack statitistics were kept by the CFL until after his retirement. Wells was original drafted in the fifth round by the San Diego Chargers of the NFL, and started his CFL career in 1971 with the Toronto Argonauts. Wells and the Argos went to the Grey Cup in his rookie season on a team quarterbacked by Joe Theisman, but lost to Calgary in the year of the how infamous Leon McQuay fumble late in the game. Wells played just one game with Toronto in 1972, before being traded to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats where he won an East All-Star at defensive end. Wells went to his second straight Grey Cup with the Tiger-Cats in 1972 and it was another dramatic finish. This time, however, Wells came out on the winning side when Ian Sunter kicked a field goal on the last play of the game to defeat Saskatchewan. Wells remained with the Tiger-Cats in 1973 and then joined he Saskatchewan Roughrdiers in 1974 where he would playe until midway through the 1978 season. With the Riders, Wells won three more division All-Stars in 1974, 1975 and 176 and was a CFL All-Star in 1974. With Saskatchewan, Wells went to his second Grey Cup in 1976, another heart breaking loss to Ottawa on th last minute Tony Gabriel touchdown. Wells returned to Hamilton in 1978 in an August trade for defensive tackle Mike Samples. Argonaut Defensive End Liable To Do Anymthing - October 26, 1971 Wells Traded to Hamilton - August 29, 1978
