Jim Walter played high school football in Montreal and attended Tulsa for one season. In 1964, Walter starred for the St. Lambert Saints intermediate team before joining the Toronto Argonauts in 1965. Walter played four games with the Argos in his rookie season before being sent to Montreal where he completed the season. Walter would remain with the Als for the next four seasons (1966-69). With the Alouettes, Walter played defensive back and saw some action returning kicks. After some defenisve mistakes early in 1969, Walter fell out of favour with the Montreal coaching staff, so in 1970, Walter moved West to Saskatchewan to join the Riders where he would play another four seasons (1970-73). Walter saw the ball a lot more with the Riders as a punt returner. Statistically, his best year was his first year on the prairies when he had 79 returns for 642 yards to finish second in the West. That works out to an 8.1 yard average which is very good for the era of no blocking on punt returns. Also in 1973, Walter had 373 yards on kickoff returns, third best in the West. Walter's numbers were not so high in his final three seasons, but he did lead the West in punt return yardage in both 1972 and 1973. As a defensive back, Walter had 13 career interceptions, including a career high of 5 in one season with the Riders in 1971. Walter had one career touchdown, that coming on a 44 yard interception return in his last season with Montreal in 1969. Walter also served as as the backup punter and was called into action a couple of times during his career.
