George Tsonos was born in Montreal and started playing football for Verdun High School until his graduation in 1957. During the 1957 football season Tsonos played for Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and in 1958 for the Lakeshore Alouettes under coach, and former Alouette great, Herb Trawick. Tsonos joined the Montreal Alouettes for two seasons (1959 and 1960) then started at quarterback for the Verdun Shamcats who won the Intermediate Dominion Championship in 1961. A knee injurty forced Tsonos into retirment, but he returned to play Intermediat e all with the Montreal North Bears in 1965 and 1966.
