Don Sutherin

Don Sutherin was a Hall of Fame defensive back and kicker, who played mainly with Hamilton.  Sutherin began his CFL career in 1958 with Hamilton, and he saw action on both offense and defense, as well as doing kickoffs.  He had 23 carries for 62 yards and had his first CFL interception in his rookie season.  Sutherin went to the NFL in 1959, playing 2 games with Pittsburgh and 6 with the New York Giants.  Sutherin played 4 games with Pittsburgh in 1960, before being released and returning to the CFL.  Sutherin only played on game in 1960 with Hamilton, but added another interception hitting on 2 of 4 fieldgoal attempts.  Sutherin's career in the CFL took off in 1961 when he won the East scoring title with 69 points, led the East in interceptions with 11 and was named an East All-Star (CFL All-Stars didn't start until 1962).  In 1962, Suthering added 8 interceptions and captuered his second East All-Star honour as well as being named to the first All-Canadian team.  Sutherin was limited to only 8 games in 1963, the only year he failed to record at least one interception in his CFL career.  Sutherin bounced back in 1964,with 6 interceptions and capturing his second East scoring title on route to his thired East All-Star honour and his second All-Canadian.  Sutherin was an East All-Star again in 1965 and won his third scoring title.  Sutherin finished second in the East in scoring in 1966, losing out to Ottawa's Moe (The Toe) Racine.  Ironically, Sutherin ended up in Ottawa the following season and split the placekicking with Racine.  Sutherin's move to Ottawa took a detour through Edmonton.  After the 1966 season, Sutherin was traded in a major deal with Edmonton.  Hamilton traded Sutherin, along with QB Frank Cosentino, RB Gerry McDougall and Billy Wayte to Edmonton for Tommy Joe Coffey, Bill Redell, Marshal Starks and Ed Turek.  Suthering refused to report to Edmonton as he had a business in Hamilton.  Just before the 67 season  started, Edmonton traded him to Ottawa for receiver Ian MacDonald.  Sutherin took over the sole kicking duties in 1968 and won his fourth East scoring title with a new career high of 112 points.  Sutherin also added 5 interceptions in 1968 to pick up his fifth East All-Star honour at defensive back.  Sutherin upped his point total in 1969 to 116, but finished second in the East in scoring, losing to Tommy Joe Coffey who added 12 touchdowns to his kicking points to run away with the scoring title at 148 points.  Sutherin had his second best year in terms of numbers of interceptions with 10 and won both East and CFL All-Star honours to bring his career total to 6 East All-Star awards and 3 All-Canadians.  Sutherin played his final season in 1970 with Toronto.  He played only 5 games, but added another 4 interceptions to his belt to boost his career total to 158.

Note:  There appears to be an error in the official 1967 stats.  Sutherin made 3 of 7 fieldgoals, but is credited with 12 missed fieldgoals in the stats..  LIkely, Sutherin did the punting in the final game of the season when Bill Cline was injured and his punting stats were lumped in with his missed fieldgoal stats.
