From the University of Western Ontario, Dick Suderman was a third round draft pick of the Calgary Stampeders in 1964. Suderman would go on to play 8 seasons from 1964 to 1972 (he didn't play in 1969). The big defensive end collected three West divisions All-Stars (1967, 1968 and 1971). Suderman played all but one game in his career with the Stampeders. Suderman was actually traded to Hamilton in 1969 for defensive back / quarterback Billy Redell, , but didn't report to the Tiger-Cats since he was working as an accountant in Calgary. Suderman rejoined the Stampeders in 1970, and remained there until he was traded to Edmonton in 1972 for Dave Herbert. , Suderman made it to two Grey Cups with Calgary, losing to Ottawa in 1968 and getting a ring in 1971 when Calgary beat Toronto. Suderman was named the Outstanding Canadian in the 1971 Grey Cup. Dick Suderman died suddenly two days after his one game with Edmonton from a brain hemorrage. In his honor, the award for the Outstanding Canadian in the Grey Cup was named for him.
