Gordon Sturtridge

A product of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Gordon Sturtridge started his CFL Career with Winnipeg in 1949, but didn't play again in the CFL again until 1953.  Sturtridge played 4 seasons for Saskatchwan from 1953 to 1956, winning West All-Stars at defensive End in both 1955 and 1956 (there were no CFL All-Stars until 1962).  Sturtridge also played in both the 1955 and 1956 CFL (Shrine Bowl) All-Star Games.  It was on the way home from the 1956 game on December 9 that Strurtridge was killed in a plane crash along with three other Saskatchewan Roughriders (Mel Becket, Mario DeMarco and Roy Syrnyk) as well as Winnipeg Blue Bomber Calvin Jones.  Sturtridge's wife Mildred was also killed in the plane crash.  Sturtridge's #73 is one of he numbers retired by the Saskatchwan Roughriders.  Also to honor Sturtridge, the Gordon Sturtridge Football League, a minor football league, in Vancouver was named after him.
