After playing college football at both Arkansas State and Harding, Stegall was an 11th round draft pick of the Denver Gold in 1985. While with the Gold in 1985, Stegall set a league record for most pass receptions in one game. Stegall caught 16 in a game against Los Angelas on May 30, 1985. After his release by the Gold, Stegall signed with Montreal as a free agent in April of 1986. Stegall played seven games for the Als in 1986. Stegall was to have had a tryout with the Detroit Lions of the NFL, but he drowned while fishing on April 23, 1988.
Note: The 1987 CFL Facts & Figures lists Stegall's birthplace as Little Rock, Arkansas. Reports at the time of his death gave his home town as Searcy, Arkansas.
