Ward Smith was born in Calgary and attended Boise State. Smith bounced around the CFL, playing for five different teams in a career that spanned from 1969 to 1977. Smith played mainly defensive back, but saw some time at running back early in his career, and was also used as a kick returner. Smith started his career with Calgary in 1969, playing 5 games and then finishing the season with BC where he played 9 games. Smith played just one game for the Lions in 1970, before moving on to play 10 games with Winnipeg. Smith was traded to the Toronto Argonauts in 1971 as part of a deal that brought QB Don Jonas to Winnipeg, but Smith didn't play in 1971 and 1972 due to a series of injuries including an achilles tendon injury. Smith returned to play three seasons with the Alouettes from 1973 to 1975. After not playing again in 1976, Smith was with Toronto in 1977. Smith joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1978, but did not play any regular seaon games for the Cats. Smith was considered a valuable asset by teams because of his ability to start at defenisve back as a non-import, and his excellent speed. Smith, however, was known to be a "free spirit" and that helped account for his frequent movement between clubs. Ward Smith Passed away in August of 2007.
