Lester Smith originally signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in December of 1993, but was transferred to Baltimore Stallions for the 1994 season.  In his first season in Baltimore, Smith was used mainly on special teams and returning kicks.  In particular, Smith had a very good year returning punts with 582 yards and an 11.4 yard average.  Smith played in only 6 games in 1995, but had moved into a starting job on defence.  With the folding of the U.S based teams, Baltimore moved to Montreal to reform the Alouettes in 1996.  Smith, however, was released by the Als in June, 1996 before the season started and signed by the Toronto Argonauts.  Smith played three seasons with the Argos (1996-98), winning East All-Stars in 1997 and 1998 and a CFL All-Star in 1997.  Smith became a free agent after the 1998 season, but was resigned by the Argos only to be traded in May, 1999 to Montreal for draft picks.  Smith played three more seasons with the Als (1999-2001) before being released in April, 2002.  Smith collected his third East All-Star with Montreal in 2000.
