Doug Smith was an all-star guard at Wilfrid Laurier, and was drafted in the fourth round of the 1974 CFL College Draft by the Montreal Alouettes. The Alouettes converted Smith to center, and Smith would play six seasons for the Alouettes (1974-80) in his first tour of duty in Montreal. Smith missing the entire 1975 season due to a knee injury. While with the Alouettes, Smith won an East All-Star in 1979, and playing in four Grey Cup games. Smith and the Alouettes won two of those (1974 and 1977), and losing two (1978 and 1979). After the 1980 season, Smith was traded to the Toronto Argonauts along with the Als second territorial draft selection for offensive guard Bill Norton. Smith played two seasons with Toronto (1981-82) before being traded back to the Alouettes for wide receiver Mike Rodrigue. Smith would finish his career with two more seasons (1983-84) in Montreal.
