Gary Schreider attended Queen's University before spent nine years in the CFL from 1956 to 1964. Eeight of those years were with the the Ottawa Rough Riders, with only 1962 away from the Nation's Capital which he split betweeen BC and Hamilton. Schreider was working towards a law degree at Osgoode Hall in Toronto while playing football and the trade in 1962 to BC for tackles Mel Semenko and Billy Graham didn't fit in with his long term plans to become a lawyer. Schreider played 7 games for the Lions until school started and then returned East when the Lions swung a trade for him with Hamilton n exchange for Ron Howell. Schreider was a solid two way performer, playing running back on offense and linebacker on defense. Schreider won an East All-Star in 1960 as a linebacker. Schreider was also a talented place kicker and returned kickoffs and punts. In his second season in 1958, Schreider was second in the East in scoring with 68 points and he had a career high of 71 points in 1960. Schreider played in one Grey Cup, a win by Ottawa over Edmonton 16-6 in 1960. Schreider' was the first president of the CFLPA (CFL Player's Association) in 1965, which might have helped hasten his exit from the game. After football, Schreider continued to excel. Schreider was a lawyer who attained the Queen's Counci designation. Besides the CFL, Schreider also had an impact on the National Hockey League where he served as an arbitrator for over ten years. Schrieder accumulated a number of honours in his life including being a member of the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame, the Queen's University Sports Hall of Fame and the St. Michael's College Wall of Fame.
