After playing at the University of Wyoming, Dick Schnell was a 19th round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1961. Later that year, Schnell joined the Montreal Alouettes. Schnell would go on to play two seasons in Montreal (1961 and 1962) before being traded to Toronto for quarterback Tom Maudlin. However, before Schnell could suit up for the Argos, he was purchased by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Schnell played four with Saskatchewan (1963-66) and was a pupular player with Rider fans. Schnell was released by the Riders just before the 1966 season started, but later rejoined the team and played three games for them in their Grey Cup winning season. Schnell played multiple positions, linebacker, tackle and end on defence while backing up on the offensive line. Schnell totalled 5 career interceptions including three in his best season with Saskatchewan in 1963. Schnell also had three career fumble recoveries.
