After playing his college football at Weber State University, Rick Ryan was originally a first round draft pick (7th overall) of the BC Lions in the 1985 CFL college draft. Ryan was traded to Montreal in August of 1985 for offensive lineman Ian Sinclair, before he played any regular season games for the Lions. Ryan spent two seasons with the Als (1985-89) at safety. Ryan had 8 interceptions for Montreal in his second season in the league in 1986. That season, Ryan was named an East All-Star and was also the Montreal nomineee for Outstanding Canadian.
With the folding of the Montreal franchise after the 1986 season, Ryan was selected in the first round of the dispersal draft by the Calgary Stampeders. The Stampeders traded Ryan to Toronto before the season began for LB Matt Finlay. After one season with the Argos, Ryan was traded to BC for DB Nelson Martin and played three seasons for the Lions before being released in February 1991.
Besides playing safety, Ryan was also an emergency kicker, connecting on three of his five career field goal attempts.
Ryan made it to two Grey Cups, unfortunately losing both times - with Toronto in 1987 and with BC in 1988.
