Toronto Argonaut fans might argue that Jim Rountree is the best defensive back, if not player, who is not in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. When you look at Rountree's statistics and accomplishments, they might have a point. Rountree played 10 years in the CFL, all with the Argos from 1958 to 1967. In those 10 seasons, Roundtree won six East All-Star honours at defensive back (1959-64 inclusive and 1967) and one CFL All-Star (1962). Keep in mind that the CFL All-Stars only started in 1962, about halfway through Rountree's career. Rountree had a total of 41 career interceptions, including a personal high of 10 in 1960 which was tops in the East. In the first part of his career, Rountree also saw significant time on offense as both a ball carrier anda receiver. In his rookie season in 1958, Roundtree had 200 yards rushing on just 26 carries for an 8.0 yard average. In 1961, Rountree was pressed into service as a receiver and excelled with 26 catches for 427 yards a pair of touchdowns. He also had 5 interceptions that year on defence. Rountree was also used on kickoff and punt returns. In 1959, Rountree led the East with 433 yards on kickoff returns for a 27.1 yard average. That same season, Rountree had 13 punt returns for 159 yards and a 12.2 yard average - accomplished with no blocking. In 1965, Rountree accomplished another rarity in that age of no blocking on punt returns when he took a punt back 63 yards for a touchdown. After retiring as a player, Rountree was an assistant coach with the Argos from 1968 to 1972 and again from 1977 to 1978. Jim Rountree passed away on October 1, 2013.
