Jay Roberts played seven years at tight end for the Ottawa Rough Riders and his offensive stats parallel the rise of the tight end as an offensive weapon in the CFL in the 1960s. Robert's use as a pass receiver went up in each of his first five seasons. Roberts had 9 catches in his rookie season in 1964, and those numbers went up in the next four years to hit a high of 32 catches in 1968. Roberts slipped back in 1969, but in his final season Roberts was on pace for his best season ever with 16 catches in just 5 games. Roberts won two Grey Cups with the Rough Riders (1968 and 1969) and lost onece (1966). Roberts stayed in Ottawa after his football career was over, working for the federal government. Jay Roberts passed away on October 6, 2010 at the age of 67 after a long battle with cancer.
