Richards was signed as a free agent by the Ottawa Rough Riders in April of 1995 and played mainly on special teams during his rookie season. Richards was released partway throug the 1996 season in October. The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Richards in January of 1997, but released him in June before he season started. Richards was then signed by the BC Lions in October of 1997, playing 4 games for them that season and 12 more in 1998.
