Ken PloenKen Ploen is probably best remembered for being a good passing QB, and indeed his pass completion percentage normally was in the high 50's, but he was a very good all around athlete. Ploen joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1957 and played all 11 seasons for the Blue and Gold, before retiring in 1967. Ploen saw signficant action at QB in his rookies seson in 1957, but In his next two seasons with the Bombers, Ploen was the back-up QB and a starting defensive back. In fact, in 1959, he led the West in pass interceptions with 10 and was named a West All-Sar at DB. In an interesting statistical anomoly, Ploen was actually the West All-Star at QB in his rookie season while throwing only 140 passes which is less than even his teamate Duncan who threw 236 passes and had a higher completion percentage.* Ploen took over as the Winnipeg #1 QB in 1960, and held that positin until his retirement. His best year passing was easily in 1962 when he completed 65.6% of his 208 attempts for 2097 yards and an excellent 17TD passes to only 4 interceptions. Ploen won All-Canadian honours in 1965 for his 58.2% completion percentage, 1789 yards and 15 toudhdowns. As mentioned previously, Ploen was a good all around athlete. He ranked high in rushing through much of his career, and keep in mind losses while passing wree included in rushing stats in his early years. Even so,Ploen racked up 2997 yards career rushing to go with 16,470 career yards passing. Ploen was not used often as a pass receiver with 6 career pass receptions, but three of them went for touchdowns. In additon, Ploen was used to kick converts in his rookie season. Ken Ploen was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1975. * The source for the All-Star selection is the 2007 CFL Facts & Figures book which has been known to be wrong sometimes!
