Rudy Phillips had a tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL in 1981, before signing with the Ottawa Rough Riders in September of 1981. Phillips played six games for the Eastern Riders in 1981 and remained with Ottawa for the next three seasons. Phillips was an East and CFL All-Star while wirh Ottawa in 1982 and 1983, and he won the Outstanding Offensive Lineman in the CFL in both those years. Phllips was released by Ottawa in May of 1985 and signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills of the NFL. After his release by Buffalo, Phillips returned to the CFL, signing with Edmonton in April of 1986. Phillips played two seasons with the Eskimos in 1986 and 1987. In 1986, Phillips won his third division All-Star, this time in the West, and his third CFL All-Star award. Edmonton released Phillips prior to the 1988 season, he he signed with the Calgary Stampeders for one more season. Video on Rudy Phillips from cfl.ca
