Shonte Peoples was a fierce pass rusher who terrorized CFL quarterbacks from 1994 to 2003, recording a total of 77 quarterback sacks. Peoples was a standout safety at Michigan, but became a linebacker and defensive end in the CFL. Peoples started his CFL career with the expansion Las Vegas Posse in 1994, recording 14 sacks as a rookie. When Las Vegas folded, Peoples was selected by another expansion team, the Birmingham Barracudas in the dispersal draft and upped his sack total by one with 15 sacks in 1995. With the folding of the U.S. based teams, People was selected by Saskatchewan in the dispersal draft but an injury forced him to miss all of 1996 and his debut in Saskatchewan would be delayed for another five years. Peoples signed as a free agent with Winnipeg in 1997 and recorded another 13 sacks. 1997 was a banner season for Peoples as he was an East All-Star, a CFL All-Star and was also named the Outstanding Defensive Player in the East. That success attrackted NFL attention and Peoples signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears for 1998 but was released after traiing camp. Peoples returned to Winnipeg in September, 1998, but played only one game before being released. Calgary picked up Peoples and he played one game for the Stamps in 1998. After being out of the CFL in 1999, Peoples returned to Calgary for 2000 and recorded 12 sacks to win a West divison All-Star. A free agent again, People signed with Saskatchewan and finally played his first game with them in 2001. Peop0le had 12 sacks in 2001 to earn his third divison All-Star. People played two more years for the Riders, dropping to only 2 sacks in 2002, but rebounding for 8 sacks in his final season in 2003. People's departure from Saskatchewan after 2003 was probably helped by his arrest for marijuana possesion - though it was a small amount and the charges were later dropped.
