Born in Baltimore, Ostendarp won a scholarship to the University of Maryland, but World War II came along before Ostendarp could start his college career. After the war, Ostendarp ended up playing his college football at Bucknel. At only five foot eight and 178 pounds, Ostendarp was an unlikely football player, but he not only played but played very well. Well enough to even get to the NFL where Ostendarp played two years for the New York Gians. Ostendarp joined the Montreal Alouettes for one season in 1952. After retiring as a player, Ostendarp turned to coaching first at his alma matter of Bucknel then as defensive coordinator at Willams and Cornell. In 1959, Ostendarp became the Head Coach at Amherst where he remained for nearly 50 years and became a legend at that school called "The Darp". Jim Ostendarp passed away on December 15, 2005.
The games played stats are unofficial and from the 2005 Montreal Media Guide. No individual stats were kept in the East until 1954..
