Steve Oneschuk was raised in St. Catherines, Ontario where he was an outstanding four sport athlete in football, hockey, basketball and lacrosse. Coming out of highschool, Oneschuk was good enough to be offered a tryout by th eHamilton Tiger-Cats, butg he declined and went to the University of Toronto on a scholarship. At the U of t, Oneschuk was a four time all-star in football and a three time all-star in basketball. In addition, Oneschuk was named the most outstanding athlete twice, in 1953 and 1954. That was more than enough to gain Oneschuk entry into the University of toronto's athletic hall of fame. In 1954, Oneschuk was selected in the draft by both Hamilton and Edmonton as the Big Four / IRFU and the WIFU held separate drafts at the t imje. Oneschuk chose Hamilton and would play six seasons with the Tiger-Cats from 1955 to 1960. Like many players of his era, Oneschuk played both ways. On offence, Oneschuk played halfback / fullback and defensive back on defence. Oneschuk also saw some action at linebacker, and did placekicking. Oneschuk saw more action on offence early in his career, and in fact his rookie season in 1955 was his best ofensively. Oneschuk had 41 carries for 233 yards which was more than his other five seasons put together. As his career progressed, Onenschuk saw more action as a kicker and hit a career high of 61 points in 1957. Defensively, Oneschuk had 8 career interceptions, with a career high 4 coming in 1959. Oneschuk was in three Grey Cups with the Tiger-Cats, all three against Winnipeg. Hamilton won in 1957, but lost in 1958 and 1959. Steve's other job besides playing football was as a techer where he he a long career both as a classroom teacher and later as a principal before a heart attack forced him to retire in 1987. Oneschuk's other passion was wood carving, especially very detailed bird carvings. Steve Oneschuk passed away on Apri 20, 1996.
