While an excellent player in his own right, Bronko Nagurski's biography almost has to start with his famous father. Bronko Nagurski Sr. was an outstanding college and pro football player. To make it a short story, Nagurski Sr. is a member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame and the award given in college football to the Outstanding Defensive Player in the NCAA is named after him. After his retirement from football, Nagurski Sr. also had an outstandng career as a professional wrestler. Bronko Nagurski Jr. followed in his father's footsteps to some extent, taking up football and exceling at it, but there were differences. Nagurski Sr. played mainly defensive tackle and fullback, but Nagurski Jr. was an offensive lineman. Ok, if you want to be picky, Nagurski Sr. also played some offensive line. Nagurski Sr. went to Minnesota, while Nagurski Jr. attended Notre Dame. Bronco Nagurski Jr. was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the tenth round of the NFL draft , but chose to come to Canada. Bronko Nagurski Jr. came to the CFL in 1959 and played 7 seasons, all with Hamilton. In a sense, it was a return to his roots, since Bronko Nagurski Sr. was born in Rainy River, Ontario, before moving to the States early in his life. Bronko Nagursi Jr. won three East All-Star selections (1962, 1964 and 1965) and two CFL All-Star selections (1962 and 1965). Nagurski was a member of the Hamilton Grey Cup winning teams in 1963 and 1965. Bronco Nagurski Jr. passed away on March 8, 2011.
