Murphy was a tenth round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 1981. He then had a tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1982, before signing with Winnpeg for the 1983 season. Murphy had 61 catches and 1126 yards in his rookie season, despite only playing 14 games. Playing in all 16 games in 1984, Murphy bumped his totals to 70 catches and 1220 yards. Injuries kept Murphy to only12 igames in 1985, keeping him from reaching the thousand yard mark receiving for the first time in his career. Murpy, however, bounced back in a big way iin 1986 and has an oustanding season with 116 catches for 1746 yards and winning Eastern and All-Canadian honours as well as being named the OUstanding Player in the CFL. Murphy had over 1000 yards receiving in each of tghe next three season, earing him Eastern All-Star honours in all of them. Murphy played his final season in the CFL in 1990. In total, he played eight seasons from 1983 to 1990 for Winnipeg and ranks as one of the Bombers and the league's greatest all-time receiviers. Murphy was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
