Ed Mitchell was born in Toronto, played high school footall in Toronto and then three years of junior football with the Parkdale Lions. Mitchell was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in the 1957 junior draft, and played with the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen of the ORFU (Ontario Rugby Football Union) in 1958 before joining Montreal in 1959. Mitchell had a very good first year in Montreal, playing defensive back and returning punts for the Als. As a punt returner, Mitchell was third in the East in return yardage. As a defensive back, Mitchell recorded three pass interceptions. Mitchell returned to the Als in 1960, but played only four games. After leaving the Als in 1960, Mitchell joined the Calgary Stampeders towards the end of the season. Mitchell New Face in Calgary Lineup - October 8, 1960
