After playing at Graceland University, Messam joined the BC Lions in 2010 as an undrafted free agent. . lMessum didn't see a lot of action at running back in his rookie season with only 23 carries, but he did show promise. That promise was overshadowed by some offield / maturity issues and caused BC to dispatch hm to Edmonton for a fifth round draft pick. Messam had a great season in 2011, rushing for over a thousand yards, the first Canadian running back to do that in over a decade. Messam was especially impressive with is hard running style that often took multiple tacklers to bring him down. It was impressive enough that the Miami Dolphins of the NFL signed him as a free agent for 2012. Things didn't work out with Miami and after Messam was released he rejoined the Eskimos partway through the 2012 season. It was a changed landscape in Edmonton who had installed Hugh Charles as their starting running back in the absence of Messam, and had also acquired Cory Boyd after his release by Toronto earlier in the season. Messam ended up seeing limited action with Edmonton for the rest of the year, and didn't display the form he had show in 2011. With that, Messam was traded in the of-=season to the Montreal Alouettes for a sixth round draft pick. Messam Confident he can Return to 2011 Form - February 6, 2013
