Glenn (Keeper) McWhinney played junior football for the Weston Wildcats in Winnipeg and then the St. Bonaface Intermediate team before joining the Edmonton Eskimos in 1952. McWhinney played three seasons (1952-54) with Edmonton, mainly as a Flying Wing (slotback in modern parlance), but also served as a backup quarterback. McWinney was given his nickname by Edmonton coach Frank Filchock after one play at quarterback whee McWhinney kept the snap from center and powered his way into the endzone for a touchdown. McWinney on a Grey cup with the Esksimoes in 1954 and then played two seasons with his hometown Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1955 and 1956. Besides playing football, McWhinney was an outstanding basketball player and considered one of the best athletes of his time in Winnipeg. McWhinney is a member of both the Manitoba and Albert spots halls of fame. Glenn McWhinney passed away on April 14, 2012.
