McKeown was a first round draft pick by Calgary in the 1984 CFL college draft. McKeown played three seasons with Calgary (1984-86) before being drafted by the Montreal Concordes in a competitive balance draft. When Montreal folded, he was taken by Hamilton in the dispersal draft. McKeown spent the entire 1987 serason on the Hamilton practice roster, then resigned with Calgary for 1988. Calgary released McKeown afte the 1688 season and he signed with Toronto for 1989. Toronto released McKeown on July 1, 1990 and he signed as a free agent with Edmonton in March of 1991, but did not play any games for Edmonton.
