William (Bucky) McElroy

Bucky McElroy was born in Monroe, LA and played his college football at Southern Misssissipp where he is considered one of the best players in the history of that school. In three seasons, McElory ran for over 2500 yards. McElroy was named to the Southern Mississippi Hall of Fame in 1967 and the Misssissippi Hall of Fame in 1981.  In 2011, McElroy w as named to the prestigious Southern Mississippi Legends Club.

McElroy was draftedin the seventh round of the 1953 NFL college draft by the Chiago Bears and played one game for them in 19544.  In  1955, McElroy joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as a running back.  McElroy had a very good season that year, rushing for 621 yards with six touchdowns in just eight games for Hamilton.

Former Running Back Great Bucky McElroy Passes Away at 83

Death Notice for William (Bucky) McElroy

MONROE – Services for former professional football player William “Bucky” McElroy, Jr. will be Friday. He died July 18 at age 83.

He played running backl at Southern Mississippi, then was drafted by the Chicago Bears of the NFL. He completed his career with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL. He was president of James Machine Works.

Survivors include his wife Joy, a son and a daughter.
