After playing one game with Edmonton in 1999, McCullough played for the Los Angelas Xtreme of the short lived XFL in 2000. That got him noticed and signed by the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL in 2002. McCullough returned to the CFL with Calgary and took over the #1 running back spot partway through the season. McCullough signed as a free agent with Saskatchewan in 2004, but played only one game for the Riders.
