Mike Martin was born in Beaumont, TX and moved to Kennewick Washington where he was a star three sport athlete (football, basketball and dtrack). Martin played his college football at Washington State, and was drafted by both the Denver Broncos of the AFL and the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL in 1962. Martin ended up coming to play with the BC Lions in 1962 whee he beat out returning starter Mel Semenko for one of the defensive end spots with the Leos. Martin would go on to play seven seasons with BC from 1962 to 1968. Martin played in two Grey Cup games with the Lions, losing to Hamilton in 1963 and then winning the grudge return match with Hamilton in 1964, the first Grey Cup in BC Lions franchise history. The Lions moved Martin from his normal defensive end spot to middle linebacker, and in 1969, he lost the job to Dave Tobey and was released before the season started. Martin played in the Continental Football League with the SEattle Rangers in 1969, but was recalled by the Lions for the West sefmi-final game against Calgary, when an injury struck down defensive end Bob Brown.
