Makowiecki played two years of college football at Geneva College (PA) before joining Florida State.  Makowiecki played both offensive and defensive tackle at Florida State from 1953-54 and was elected to the FSU Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.  Makowiecki joined the Montreal Alouttes in 1955 and was with the Als when they lost the Grey Cup to Edmonton. Makowiecki missed 1956 due to a stint in the U.S. Army, and rejoined Montreal for 1957.  A major knee injury prematurely ended his career.  Al Makowiecki passed away on June 2, 2005.
