Jason Maas had a bit of an up and down CFL career. From the University of Oregon, Maas signed as a free agent with the Edmonton Eskimos for the 2000 season. Maas had been largely a backup while at Oregon, but had shown flashes of greatness when he was given the chance to play. Maas's university experience was perhaps a foreshadow of what his pro career would be like. Maas spent the almost obligatory rookie season as a backup to Nealon Greene in 2000, and then got his chance as the starter in his second season in 2001. Maas had a pretty decent season, completing 59.3% of his passes and throwing 21 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions. All of which earned Maas a West division All-Star honour in 2001. Just when it looked like Maas was set up to be the long term starter for Edmonton, along comes Ricky Ray in 2002, who took over the regular pivot spot. Maas did not see much action in 2003 (only 29 pass attempts), playing behind Ray, but Edmonton did win the Grey Cup that year. Maas got his starting job back in 2004 as Ray was trying out in the NFL and Ray turned in a sparkling season with a 65.6% completion rate and a career high 5270 yards passing with 31 touchdown tosses. Ray returned to Edmonton in 2005, and Maas went from those career highs to only three paas attempts. again on the plus side, Maas was on his second Grey Cup winner. With Ray set as the starter, Maas was traded to Hamilton in 2006 along with a draft pick for quarterback Danny McManus, offensive lineman Tim Bakker and a first round draft pick. It gave Maas a chance to be a starter again, but things didn't go well in Hamilton. It was a so-so season for Maas on a Hamilton club that was not very good. Maas completed 61.6% of his passes, but only 8 toudchdown paases to 17 interceptions. Maas spent the first half of the 2007 season with the Tiger-Cats with a smilar lack of success and was dispatched to the Montreal Alouettes where he finished the year backing up Anthony Calvillo. Maas then returned "home" to Edmonton for 2008 and spent his final two seasons backing up Ricky Ray once again. Maas became an assistant coach with the Toronto Argonauts in 2012. Maas was the quarterbacks coach. And the new starting quaretback for Toronto? None other than Ricky Ray who been obtained in a controversial trade frm Edmonton in the off season. Ray and Maas would be together again for a Grey Cup as the Argos won the 100th Grey Cup in their home stadium in Toronto.
