From Utah State, where starred at both football and basketball, Earl Lindley was drafted in the 16th round of the 1954 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears. Lindley turned down a chance to play for the Bears, and instead played four seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos from 1957 to 1957 as a running back and linebacker. Perhaps not as well remembered by the football public as Jackie Parker, Normie Kwong and Johnny Bright, Earl Lindley was an imortant part of the Edmonton Dynasty that won three consecutive Grey Cups from 1954 to 1956. In his first season in 1954, Lindley was used only as a receiver on offence, making 12 catches, while recording 3 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, on defence. In 1955 and 1956, Lindley was used more as a running back, racking up 542 and 357 yards in those two seasons which are pretty good numbers considering the talent he shared the backfield with. Lindley had 3 interceptions in both those seasons, and took 3 more of them back for touchdowns. In his final season in 1957, Lindley was used mianly on defence and added one more interception return for a touchdown giving him 10 career interceptions and 5 touchdowns on interception returns.A shoulder injury in 1957 ended his football career. Lindley returned home to Utah where he served as an assistant coach at BYU and then had a long head coaching career at the high school level. Lindley was elected to the Utah State Athlectic Hall of Fame in 2010. sEarl Lindley passed away at the age of 79 on February 13, 2012.
