From Stanford, Dave Lewis was a fifth runddraft pick of the New York Giants in 1967. Lewis wound up joining the Montreal Alouettes for 1967 and his versatilaity was ideal for the smaller rosters of he CFL. Lewis could play quarterback, running back and defensive back. As well, Lewis returned kicks and handled the punting. In 1967, Lewis had 32 pass attempts, 168 yards rushing, an interception, two fumble recoveries and punted for a 43 yardaverage. In his second season in 1968, the Alouettes made use mainly as a receiver out of the backfield as he had 41 catches for 794 yards. It was Lewis's punting that really shone, however, as he averaged 46.8 yards per punt. That got the attention of the NFL and Lewis played out his option and signed with the New York Giants for 1969. The Giants released Lewis before the season started, but Lewis got another chance with Cincinnati in 1970. Lewis played four seasons (1970-73). for the Bengals and led the NFL in punting in both 1970 and 1971. Lewis did make a short two game return to the Alouettes in 1975.
