From the University of Wisconsin, Greg Kabat was one of the first imports, joining the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1933. Kabat played for the Bombers until 1940, and was an integral part of the B ombers' 1935 Grey Cup victory - the first by a Western team. Kabat was best known for his devestatsing blocking from his halfback positon, clearing the way for speedsters like Fritz Hanson. Kabat also sometimes played at guard (or inside using the terms of the day) and also saw duty at quarterback and as a punter and place kicker. Kabat won West All-Stars at Flying Wing in 1938, at Guard in 1939 and Quarterback in 1940. Also in 1940, Kabat was named the Most Valuable Player in the WIFU as the Bomber QB. Besides the 1935 Grey Cup victory, Kabat played in three other Grey Cups with the Bombers. In 1937 and 1938, the bombers lost to the Toronto Argonauts before gettng another victgory in 1939 over the Ottawa Roughr Riders. In 1941, when World War II forced the Calgary Bronks to disband, Kabat led up a replacement team in Vancouver. Ghr Grizzlies lasted only the single season and it would be 1954 before Vancouver and BCwould return to the WIFU. Following his playing career, Kabat turned to coaching. Actually, his coaching career started as early as his first season with Winnipeg in 1933 when he doubled as line coach while playing. Kabat coached at the high school level and then was the head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds. Greg Kabat was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1966.
