Jones was one of the wave of talented young African American QBs who stormed into the CFL in the 1970s. One year behind Chuck Ealy in Hamilton, Jones joined Montreal in 1973. Jones had a good rookie season, splitting the QB duties with George Mira as the duo replaced the iinjured Sonny Wade. Jones completed 61.3% of his 117 passes. In 1974 Wade returned, but Jones kept the #1 QB spot and led Montreal to the Grey Cup. Jones completed 52.4% of his passes for what would turn out to be a career high 2297 yards. Jones was the East All-Star in 1974. In 1975, Jones split the QB duties during the regular season with Wade, but this time was the losing QB in the Grey Cup rematch with Edmonton. Jones moved to Hamilton for 1976 and played three seasons there as the Tiger-Cats regular QB. He had problems in his first eason in Hamilton, but more than regained his form in 1977 and 1978 when he posted 58.7% and 59.2 % completion percentages. In 1979, Jones moved to Ottawas as the CFL did a bit of a QB shuffle. Jones shared the QB duties with Conredge Holloway as Tom Clements had moved on to Saskatchewan, and then ironically to Hamilton where JOnes had just left.
