Johnson signed as a free agent with BC in July of 1992. He did not play in the CFL in 1993 He had a tryout with Saskatchewan in 1994, but was released before the season started. The expansion Shreveport Pirates signed him as a free-agent in September of 1994 and he played with them in 1994 and 1995. With the folding of the American based teams, he became a free agent in February, 1996 and resigned with Saskatchewan.
