From the University of Arkansas, Michael Jenkins signed with the Toronto Argonauts in 2000. Jenkins had a promising rookie season with 872 yards rushing. Jenkins exploded in his second season in 2001. Despite missing two games, Jenkins ran for 1484 yards and caught 43 passes for another 361 yards. That season, Jenkins won both East and CFL All-Star honours. It also set a single season rushing record for the Argonauts and Jenkins was named their Most Outstanding Player. His outstanding 2001 season got Jenkins a shot in the NFL, and he signed with the Houston Texans. Jenkins spent all of 2002 on the practice roster of the Texans. Jenkins returned to the Argonauts in 2003, but didn't regain his All-Star form with 814 yards in 15 games. Jenkins was cut by the Argonauts in 2004 after the double blue signed free agent running back John Avery. An ankle injury compounded the problem for Jenkins and he ended up missing theentire season. Jenkins signed with the Montreal Alouettes in February, 2005, but never saw action as he again injuries helped keep him out of the line-up.
