Before World War II, Al Hurley played college football at Western Ontario. Hurley rose to the rank of Lt. Commander during the war and was second in command of HCMS Ste. Hyacinthe RCN Signal School. Hurley played quarterback for the H.M.C.S Donnacona-St. Hyachinthe team (also called the Navy Combines) that won the Grey Cup in 1944. Hurley was also a QRFU All-Star that season.
