Tom Hugo might be the best player not in the Hall of Fame. He played seven years for Montreal from 1953 to 1959 and was an East All-Star at Center in all seven years he played (there were no CFL All-Stars until 1962). Not only that, Hugo played both ways and won five division All-Stars as a linebacker (1954, 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958). To underscore Hugo's athletic ability, he was also used for kickoff returns. His career high on kickoff returns was in 1956 when he had 7 for 116 yards and a 16.6 yard average. Those might bot be Gizmo Williams stats, but try and image today's 300 pound Centers returning kickoffs without giggling. Hugo had 25 career interceptions (not counting 1953 in which there were no stats kept), including 9 in 1958 to lead the East. Tom Hugo passed away on November 15, 2004.
