Prior to coming to Canada, Huffman played college ball at Tennessee where he was an All-American tackle, and a ninth round draft pick in the 1945 NFL draft. Huffman played at Tennessee in 1942 and 1946, serving in the U.S. Marines inbetween where he continued to play football. Huffman played four seasons in the NFL (1947-50) with the Los Angelas Rams. Huffman left the Rams in a flurry of legal action. After signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for 1951, the Rams obtained a court injuction to keep him from Winnipeg as they tried to exercise the reserve clause in Huffman's contract. The Rams eventually lost the court case and Winnpeg was very happy to get Huffman. Dick Huffman was an excellent two way lineman who played five years with Winnipeg from 195 to 1955. Huffman was traded after the 1955 season to Calgary in 1956 for end Tom Iner. Hoffman would finish his career with two seasons in Calgary (1956-57). Huffman was a two time West All-Star at offensive tackle in 1952 and 1954, and a three time West All-Star at defensive tackle in 1953, 1954 and 1955 (there were no CFL All-Stars until 1962). The overlap of the years in 1954 makes Huffman one of only a handful of players to win both offenisve and defensive All-Stars in the same season. Besides playing both sides of the ball on the line, Huffman was sometimes pressed into duty as a receiver and has a touchdown reception in 1954. Dick Huffman was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
